Face recognition technology is here to revolutionize every walk of life.
This airport in Sydney, Austrailia will be the first one to use its application for travelling, where “your face will be your passport”. Qantas, an Austrailia based airline with world’s largest fleet, has partnered with Sydney Airport for the trial of this biometric tech, with passengers on selected international flights taking part.
This upgraded biometric technology will use a network of cameras to monitor passengers while they pass through various checkpoints in the airport’s terminal. Meanwhile, an upcoming version of this technology will use biometrics such as thumb impressions to allow travellers to remotely check-in through a mobile app.
This biometric check-in procedure is currently under a trial phase with selected Qantas passengers and will use four “key steps” for passenger’s automated check-in, according to a statement from Sydney Airport. These include passport clearance, bag drop, lounge access, and boarding.
“Your face will be your passport and your boarding pass at every step of the process”, said CEO Sydney Airport Geoff Culbert. “In the future, there will be no more juggling passports and bags at check-in and digging through pockets or smartphones to show your boarding pass”, he added further.
Austrailia’s department of immigration is aimed to provide convenient check-in process for the passengers. The use of biometric data such as fingerprints, iris scans, and facial structures will provide a secure system of check-in which will be very difficult for hackers to hack.
Airport authorities also say that this biometric system will also be available for “lounge staff who can create a more personalized experience” when passengers arrive at the airport’s terminal.
