In honor of Madam Noor Jehan’s 92nd birthday, Google is paying tribute to the legendary singer with her own Google Doodle.
Google also went ahead and wrote a small tribute to Noor Jehan while unveiling the doodle, and said, “[The] Doodle captures Jehan’s unique singing stance — her chin tilted up, her hand flung out, and a flower in her hair. Happy Birthday, Madam.”
Noor Jehan was born on 21st September 1925 to a family of musicians in Kasur. She started singing at the age of five and her diverse tastes in both traditional folk and pop theatre are what led her star in plays and eventually movies. After having success in the local theatre, her family moved to Calcutta where Noor Jehan was discovered by directors making movies for the big screen.
Despite the fact that she starred in numerous hit movies like Khandaan, it was her voice that endeared so much to her fans. Upon the Pak-India partition, she moved to Pakistan and spent a major part of the rest of her life singing. She is well-known for her patriotic songs that have become staples, particularly on national events. Her career spanned more than six decades and she was given the honorific title of ‘Malika-e-Tarannum’ – The Queen of Melody – in Pakistan. She was also bestowed with the Sitara-i-Imtiaz and the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz by the Pakistani government.
Google Doodle is a creative project started by the search-engine giant where they honor a person, place, or event that has an association with a particular date. In the past, Google Doodle has paid homage to Abdul Sattar Edhi, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Pakistan’s Independence Day. However, doodles honoring Pakistan or Pakistanis are almost always targeted to Pakistani users only.
Today’s other Google Doodles include tributes to Mexican ballet dancer Amalia Hernandez’s 100th birth anniversary and Dr. Samuel Johnson’s 308th birthday.
