Nokia has sued Apple for infringing about 32 of its patents, covering technologies such as the display, software, chipsets, user interface, antenna and video coding.
A number of complaints were filed by Nokia in many courts of Germany and US, against Apple. Apple entered into a licensing agreement with Nokia in 2011 for using some of Nokia’s patents. Nokia claims that it offered Apple more licenses in order to use other patents. Apple declined the offer but continued to use Nokia’s patented technologies in many of its products. Ilkka Rahnasto, Head of Patent Business at Nokia, said,
“Through our sustained investment in research and development, Nokia has created or contributed to many of the fundamental technologies used in today’s mobile devices, including Apple products. After several years of negotiations trying to reach an agreement to cover Apple’s use of these patents, we are now taking action to defend our rights.”
These lawsuits were a retribution to the suit which Apple filed this Tuesday. Apple filed a suit against Nokia and Patent Assertion Entities (PAEs) which stated that PAEs Acacia Research Corporation, Conversant Intellectual Property Management Inc., and their subsidiaries have colluded with Nokia
“to obtain from Nokia thousands of patents as part of a plan to extract and extort exorbitant revenues unfairly and anti-competitively from Apple and other innovative suppliers of cell phones, and ultimately from the consumers of those products.”
Apple spokesperson said that Apple is willing to pay the licensing money fairly but Nokia is using other tactics to extort money.
Finnish company and once the world leader in mobile technology, Nokia has entered into a 10-year licensing agreement with HMD Global recently. And now it’s going after Apple again to win the patent battle.
