Netflix Inc, the popular video streaming service has decided to block proxy access of subscribers to watch content that is not available locally. The Vice President of Content Delivery Architecture at Netflix, David Fullagar has stated that, “If all of our content were globally available, there wouldn’t be a reason for members to use proxies or unblockers.”
This restriction reinforces the responsibility of Netflix towards content owners to only provide the content in geographies they have a license for. Currently, all the shows will not immediately be available for subscribers in certain countries however, Netflix promises to resolve this in a matter of few weeks.
According to the spokesperson of Netflix, “Ultimately, the aim is to provide a service around the world that is more similar than not. Using VPNs or proxies to virtually cross borders violates Netflix’s terms of use because of licensing restrictions on TV shows and movies.”
This restriction comes just a week after Netflix went live in more than 130 countries including Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Russia and Saudi Arabia.
