Microsoft has announced that it is cutting off its support for older versions of Skype beginning March 1, 2017.
Skype has begun to transition from a peer-to-peer based architecture to a cloud-based one because it wants to provide best possible experience to its users. So, users running Skype for Windows desktop version 7.16 and below or Skype for Mac version 7.0 to 7.18 will no longer be able to sign in from March 1. Skype says,
“At Skype, we’re committed to creating the best possible app experience for our users. This is why we’ve been focusing our efforts on transitioning Skype from peer-to-peer to a modern, mobile-friendly cloud architecture.
It goes without saying, but we cannot wait for you to get your hands on the latest version of Skype and let us know what you think. We’ve poured our energy and passion into creating something truly special, and this is just the beginning.”

Skype has directed users to download the latest update to connect with their family and friends. Their account information will be securely synced with the updated version including passwords, contacts and conversations.
Skype, a video calling application, was acquired by Microsoft in 2011. It has been working on introducing new features and improvements for some time now. Last year, Skype introduced group video calls, voice translation for mobile calls and started testing Skype Mingo, a hub for the smartphone functions like texting, audio and video calling, photo-sharing and contact management. Skype has also recently partnered with Volvo Cars to introduce Skype for Business in cars.
