Meta has launched a new feature on Instagram called “Trial Reels,” aimed at helping content creators experiment with new ideas without the pressure of immediate feedback from their existing followers.
Announced last week, this tool allows creators to test their content with non-followers before sharing it with their main audience, offering valuable insights into what resonates with a broader audience.
Creating a trial reel is simple. The process is identical to making a standard Instagram reel, but users now have the option to activate the “Trial” setting before publishing. After it’s live, the reel won’t show up in the feeds of the creator’s followers or on the creator’s main profile grid; it will only be viewable to those who haven’t followed the creator.
Within one hour after publishing, creators may track engagement data such as views, likes, comments, and shares. Additionally, Instagram compares the trial reel’s performance with previous posts, providing data to help creators decide whether to share the content with their followers or explore other options.
Trial reels help artists overcome a frequent worry of losing their main audience when experimenting with new themes or forms of material. Instagram gives content producers a “gut check” on the potential of their work via this tool, allowing them to explore without worrying about follower responses right away.
Trial reels were first tested by Meta early last year, and the functionality has subsequently been improved in response to creative input. Positive results have been reported by early users, with new content concepts doing well with both new audiences and current followers. By giving content producers a secure environment in which to experiment, Meta is enabling them to push limits and confidently expand their Instagram following.
