While Pakistan is caught up in an internal battle of political parties, our external relations aren’t faring well either. The country is currently embroiled in a heated battle of words with India. Over the weekend, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, Dr. Maliha Lodhi took on India’s Minister of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj at the United Nations General Assembly session. While Dr. Lodhi earned a lot of praise for her hard-hitting statements to India, things backfired a bit when she put up a wrong picture.
Dr. Lodhi was talking about India’s misconduct in the disputed territory of Kashmir and to give a proof of it she held up a photo of a girl struck by countless pellets. It was a brilliant move except the photo was of a pellet-stricken girl from Gaza and not Kashmir.
Of course, it was Dr. Lodhi’s research team who messed up. But a blunder is a blunder and when you’re being watched by an international audience, it’s not easy to hide.
