Major blackout in Pakistan, Karachi plunges into total darkness

Last night, a 220 KV transmission line suffered a major technical fault at the national grid resulting in a black out at several regions in Pakistan. These areas included Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and parts of Punjab, whereas Karachi took the worst hit with 90% of the city plunged into total darkness.

A spokesperson from K-Electric, Karachi’s main power utility told Samaa TV that the transmission line malfunctioned when a conductor on an electrical tower broke down thus tripping Bin Qasim Power Plants and several other stations offline. Usually, tripping protects electrical power systems isolating faulted regions from the rest of the electrical network.

The affected areas in Karachi included Gulistan-e-Johar, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Gulshan-i-Jamal, Clifton, Shireen Jinnah Colony, Federal B Area, Baldia Town, Dalmia, Karsaz, old city areas, Saddar, Keamari, Lyari, and others. While other areas include Kalat, Sorab, Mangochar in Balochistan, and Peshawar, Hazara Division, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Oggi, Batgaram in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also suffered from power failure.

The restoration work has already been started which will take 2-3 hours to fully restore the power at the affected regions.
