License Approved by PNRA for Largest Nuclear Power Plant

The Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) has granted a construction license for Unit 5 of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant (C-5), marking a significant advancement in Pakistan’s nuclear energy sector.

Application and Approval Process

In April 2024, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) submitted an application for the C-5 construction license, accompanied by a Preliminary Safety Assessment Report (PSAR) and comprehensive documentation addressing nuclear safety, radiation protection, emergency preparedness, waste management, and nuclear security. After a thorough evaluation to ensure compliance with national and international standards, the PNRA issued the license on December 26, 2024.

Technical Specifications

C-5 is an advanced third-generation Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) based on the Chinese Hualong (HPR1000) design. It incorporates both active and passive safety features, including a double-shell containment and a reactor-filtered venting system, with a design lifespan of 60 years. This reactor is the third of its kind in Pakistan, following the successful operation of Karachi-based K-2 and K-3 reactors. Upon completion, C-5 will be the largest electricity-producing nuclear power plant in Pakistan, with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts.
