LG Display shows off the World’s largest flexible and transparent UHD display

LG Display claimed to have developed the world’s largest flexible and transparent display. The Ultra High Definition display was made as part of a Korean government project.

The company announced the completion of project this Thursday. The display which took about 5 years to be developed features a UHD resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and measures 77-inches. The display screen is see-through with 40% transparency and can also be flexed to a 80 millimeters radius circle.

The product was displayed at an event held at Seoul. “The completion of this large flexible and transparent display is expected to contribute to expanding new OLED markets,” said Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at LG Display Mr. In-Byung Kang. “LG Display, opened the large-sized OLED TV market in 2013, has been leading the OLED industry and will continue to bring innovation to the market,” he said.

LG Display was commissioned with the task to develop the display by the South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. The Korean government invested a total of $110 millions for the project which was a part Korean National Future Flagship Program. Back in 2012, South Korea chose LG Display over Samsung Display for the said task.

The display would find its usages in augmented reality related applications and can also be used in making infotainment system in automobiles, the company told. The company was only able to develop the first working model of the product and the company’s plans to commercialize this product aren’t clear.
