LG and Microsoft join hands to work on autonomous vehicles

LG and Microsoft are collaborating on an autonomous vehicles business utilizing Microsoft’s Azure services and LG’s own autonomous driving frameworks. LG will be using Azure services and implementing them on Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Driver-Status Monitoring Camera (DSM) and Multi-Purpose Front Camera products. It is also expected that LG will incorporate Microsoft Virtual Assistant Solution Accelerator in its infotainment system.

Sanjay Ravi, General Manager, Automotive Industry at Microsoft spoke regarding the collaboration:

Working together, we can empower automakers to deliver differentiated mobility experiences, create new services and revenue opportunities, and to build safer, more intelligent and more sustainable vehicles.

Both companies will be using the Azure Databox for capturing data on the road for analysis and creating libraries to make the self-driving software smarter and flexible to the driving conditions. The time required for learning will be significantly reduced since Azure cloud services will be responsible for much of the processing such as distinguishing between pedestrians and objects etc. Kim Jin-yong, President of the LG Vehicle Component Solutions Company expects that the combination of Microsoft’s advanced cloud infrastructure with LG’s fast-growing automotive components business will accelerate the self-driving auto industry as a whole.

It is not clear yet when we will see a commercial solution from both companies but it could be within the next 2 years.
