The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is considering partnering with Elon Musk’s Starlink to resolve ongoing internet connectivity issues in the province. This collaboration aims to enhance digital access in the region.
Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Science and Technology, Dr. Shafqat Ayaz said that if the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) neglects to fix the issue, the province government will send an official letter to Musk requesting access to Starlink’s satellite internet services.
Dr. Ayaz elucidated that the sluggish internet speeds within the province, encompassing both 4G and Wi-Fi connectivity, have significantly hindered the information technology sector. This sector serves as a vital source of revenue for freelancers, entrepreneurs, and women involved in online enterprises. He underscored the necessity of dependable internet connectivity for the continuation of these enterprises and for mitigating additional financial losses.
The provincial government had previously addressed the issue with PTA officials, who visited the IT department in Peshawar and suggested technical solutions. Despite these deliberations, no substantial advancements have been made.
Dr. Ayaz expressed disapproval of the federal government for its apparent disregard for the connectivity requirements of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, insinuating that political motivations may be influencing the delays. He remarked that Starlink has the potential to offer a transformative alternative, guaranteeing high-speed internet access for the province and fostering the expansion of its digital economy.
