IT Ministry to Boost its Digitized Criminal Records through Crime Analytics and Smart Policing Initiative

On Tuesday, the Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications, Syed Aminul Haq, announced that the crime analytics and smart policing (CASP) initiative would be adopted throughout the country following the completion of a successful pilot project in the nation’s capital as well as the capitals of the provinces.

The federal minister described how his department is modernising the antiquated policing system through the CASP project in an interview with a well-known journal. The system has been in place for decades. He made mentioned the fact that the police system in Punjab is now being spread across the country in order to develop a unified and integrated police system.

In order to roll out police technology initiatives and develop an analytics umbrella for predictive policing, the Ministry of Information and Technology (MoITT) dreamed of and provided funding for the CASP, which was carried out by the Punjab Information Technology Board.

“Under the CASP, the various core systems were implemented in the first phase in Karachi, Islamabad, Gilgit, and Quetta,” he continued. “These cities were chosen because they are strategically located.”

The minister continued by saying that the FIR had been computerised in all 25 registers of the police station, including register one, by using the record management system for the police stations. As of right now, 169,377 FIRs have been submitted in the various provincial capitals.

According to the minister, the complaints management system (CMS) that has been developed is a mechanism for the public to submit complaints at the level of individual police stations that does not involve any hassles. He believes that this process would ensure digital inclusion despite the fact that 895,899 complaints have been lodged thus far.

He stated the system of the criminal record office (CRO) is utilized for the maintenance of criminal records as well as identifying purposes by making use of biometrics, an individual’s physical appearance, and their prior criminal history. According to the information provided by him, this technology has been used to register 524,030 criminal records thus far.

Aminul Haq also referenced the Police Khidmat Markaz (PKM), asserting that these centers provide a total of 14 different services and that a web application called “Hotel Eye” has been developed in order to monitor the check-ins and check-outs that take place in hotels.

It saves the data of the visitor, including their CNIC and any other facts that are required, and if a criminal record checks in, this system assists the police by sending a notification for timely action because it is connected with Nadra, PSRMS, and CRO. In addition, it saves the data of the visitor, including their CNIC and any other facts that are required.

Syed Aminul Haq, highlighting the overall impact of the CASP, stated that the establishment of the first national criminal database with 1.5 million criminal profiles and the first national crimes database with 6.5 million crimes recorded, as well as the establishment of the first ICJS, the development of the first AI-based predictive policing systems, improved public service delivery, and the provision of a platform for research and development, would all be ensured. He also stated that the CASP would ensure the provision of a platform for research He says that the integration of these platforms will facilitate improved collaboration across the many departments and help them make more informed judgments.
