Despite irregular power outages, K-Electric secures top position in power segment of EFP’s awards

K-Electric (KE), the country’s premium electric supply company based in Karachi, has secured the 1st position at the 13th EFP/ILO “Best Practices Award in Occupational Safety and Health” (OSH) for the year 2017. Employers Federation of Pakistan (EFP) and International Labour Organization (ILO) were the key organizers of this international-standard award distribution ceremony.

The award distribution ceremony was recently conducted by EFP in the celebrations of International Health and Safety Day event. At the event, various companies were awarded as part of their practices in the area of Occupational Safety and Health (OSA). In the power and utility sector, the second position was secured by two contestants Sui Southern Gas Company Limited and TNB Repair and Maintenance.

Other sectors which were awarded by EFP in the event included Oil Gas and Energy, Food and Pharmaceuticals, Tourism, and Agriculture. The details of these awards can be seen here. Many high officials from EFP, ILO, EU, and the Kingdom of Netherlands attended the event.

Although the efforts of K-Electric are commendable in providing adequate electric supply and preventing unscheduled power outages yet these initiatives are not sufficient to completely resolve electric supply issues in Karachi. The way K-Electric team is organizing its tasks and offering new useful tools for its customers, such as revamped electricity bill which offers QR code feature for users’ convenience is appreciated, but we cannot deny the fact that Karachities are still facing hefty load shedding.

Meanwhile, a Chinese electric company Shangai Electric is also in talks with K-Electric to acquire the Karachi based company. If this happens then the situation may get better for residents of Karachi but it will be questionable for the country’s economy.
