Folks at MacOtakara (Japanese) believe that the iPhone 8 will support the 7.5W Qi wireless charging standard which will ultimately result in slow, overnight charging. While the Qi standard supports up 15W in extended power profile, Apple may be restricting third party manufacturers and its own accessories to operate only on the base profile.
All the wireless charging accessories will also be subject to Apple’s Made for iPhone (MFi) program otherwise they will not be applicable for use, according to the source from Wireless Power Consortium. Apple joined the group way back in February this year and it started the rumor mill that the upcoming iPhone will have wireless charging capabilities.
The wireless charger may be used to charge the Apple Watch as well alongside the iPhone according to the Japanese blog. But if the slow charging rumor sees the light, it seems that Apple is content to adopt this new feature only at the grass-root level. Given busy schedules and the day long usage of phones, slow charging doesn’t seem like a viable option. Samsung and company already have fast charging features on their phones which Apple has yet to adopt.
Nothing has been confirmed so it is best to take all this with a grain of salt or sugar, whichever suits you. iPhone 8 is expected to be launched on 12th September. Around three iPhones are expected of which one is expected to be the actual game changer and will feature a revamped design, facial recognition, and more features. The price may also be bumped up to $999 for the 64GB model whereas 256GB and 512GB will be the higher storage variants.
