According to a report by Japanese news outlet Nikkei, Apple will debut a new and improved OLED display for the next generation of their smartphone devices including the iPhone 8.
The source of this news is Sharp CEO Jeng-wu Tai, who discussed the possibility of Apple using an improved display for iPhone 8 while talking at an event at Tatung University. While discussing the new OLED display of iPhone, he added:
“The iPhone has been evolving and now it is switching from LTPS (low-temperature poly-silicon) to OLED panels. We don’t know whether Apple’s OLED iPhones will be a hit, but if Apple doesn’t walk down this path and transform itself, there will be no innovation. It is a crisis but it is also an opportunity.”
For those who do not know, Sharp is a primary supplier of smartphone panels to for the iPhones. So although this news should be taken with a grain of salt, considering the proximity of Tai with the inner developments at Apple, there is a big chance that this rumor will turn out to be true.
Apple suffered its first decline in annual sales last year. Due to these falling numbers, Apple is looking to reshape its smartphone model by introducing some key changes in its philosophy. We became a witness to these policy changes when Apple got rid of the headphone jack with iPhone 7 and introduced water resistance for the first time in their devices.
Although iPhone 8 will debut sometime in the next year, the rumors about the device have already started flowing. We will keep an eye out for more details about this next generation device by Apple and keep you informed about key changes being planned by the Cupertino tech giant.
