Huawei enters the foldable smartphone arena with 5G enabled Mate X

Just when you thought Samsung would be alone with the Galaxy Fold in the foldable smartphone segment, Huawei comes in with its own foldable phone, the Mate X. By taking a rough look at the pictures and specifications, the Mate X will definitely be a tough rival against the Galaxy counterpart.

Let’s start off with the specifications, the Mate X has 3 screens: when it is unfolded, it has an 8-inches display with an aspect ratio of 8:7.1 and resolution of 2480 by 2200 pixels. When you fold the Mate X, there are two screens: one measuring at 6.6-inches with a resolution of 2480 by 1148 pixels and this serves as the main display. Whereas the rear display is 6.4-inches with a resolution of 2480 by 892 pixels.

The biggest difference between Mate X and the Galaxy Fold is that there is absolutely no gap between the two screens once the phone is folded. Its thickness is just 5.4mm when unfolded whereas folded thickness is around 11mm. In comparison, the Galaxy Fold is 6.9mm thick when unfolded and a bulky 17mm thick when folded.

While the Mate X supports 5G, its competitor the Galaxy Fold doesn’t. Plus in terms of overall design, it seems like Huawei has the upper hand as the Mate X seems more like a normal smartphone when it is folded. It also has a bigger and better display than the Galaxy Fold which leaves us wondering if Samsung really played to its full strength if Huawei is putting out phones like this.

In regards to the phone’s internals, it is powered by the Kirin 980 which is also found in the Mate 20 currently. It has been paired with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage, equipped with a 4500mAh battery. Mate X will be available for €2,299 (PKR 364,230).
