Huawei dethrones Apple to become the second largest smartphone manufacturer in the world

Huawei has outclassed Apple for the first time consistently for June and July to become the second largest smartphone manufacturer in the world according to Counterpoint’s Market Pulse. The feat has been achieved due to Huawei’s efforts especially in terms of spending on Research and Development (R&D), aggressive marketing campaigns and sales channel expansion.

Counterpoint’s Market Pulse tracks brands based on monthly model sales across more than 40 countries in the world. Counterpoint’s Research Director Peter Richardson said that this was an important development for the Chinese brand since they have been making strides in order to build their reputation in this segment. Previously, Huawei had sold around 73 million smartphones which are a staggering 20% year-on-year growth as well as 18% growth in Europe.

The market share of top three brands in the smartphones segment is shown in the graph below. Samsung remains on top as well with a 21% share. Huawei stands around 12% whereas Apple is only a tad lower.

Do keep in mind that even though Huawei has managed to maintain its streak for two months, there is a huge chance that they will lose market share and the position ultimately in the coming months due to the launch of iPhone 8. The feat is impressive nonetheless and it’s good to see Huawei standing up to the monopoly of Samsung and Apple in the consumer segment.
