If you thought that Minecraft, one of the most creative and marvel-worthy games ever made, was just a virtual world set apart from the real one we live in, then think again! Verizon has made a real working mobile phone in the virtual world inside the block-based Minecraft.
Verizon, the largest wireless telecom in the United States, decided to go a little out of its way in order to advertise its cellular service and uniquely enough, it created a fully-functioning mobile phone right inside Minecraft. For the unaware, Minecraft is a massive open-world game where you can roam around and build structures using blocks of different kinds. The telecom giant then partnered with Jordan Maron, a popular YouTube personality for Minecraft-lovers who is also known as Captain Sparklez, to showcase their achievement. The phone can not only be used for video calls with real people outside of the game, but it can also be used as a normal web browser.
Ofcourse, it won’t be justified to call a phone-shaped gigantic 2000-inch(in the game) display a mobile phone as that might be stretching the boundaries of a phablet a little too much, but it still is a marvel on its own. Due to the block-based nature of the game, the pixel density of the display is only 40 by 30 pixels so its fair to say that you won’t be using this mobile phone as your primary display anytime soon.
While other carriers are still fighting to get the best cellular coverage in the real world, Verizon is on its way to capture the virtual one. You can have a look at the functioning phone in the video embedded below,
For the avid Minecraft-lover who needs a phone for the massive open-world game, Verizon has also provided a list of instructions on building a phone and you can have a look at the whole project over here at Github.
