Last week, a hacker leaked the Slack of GTA VI and leaked around 90 videos of the upcoming game and it is being called “the biggest video game leak” in the history of video games. A few days before the GTA hack, the most popular ride-sharing service “Uber” was also hacked and employees claimed that they weren’t able to excess their own computer data due to the encryption. Now the story has taken an interesting turn as these both hacks were done by the same group of British teen hackers Lapsus$ as Uber released the official statement accusing the group of the breach.
Lapsus$ is an international hacker group known for cyberattacks against various large tech companies. The group was first noted in December 2021 for a breach in the Brazilian Health Ministry’s computer systems. According to Uber, the company believes the teen hacking group Lapsus$ was behind the breach. Uber explains in an update that Lapsus$ has been behind a number of hacks over the past year. The group has been targeting only huge companies and humiliating their security protocols, including NVIDIA, Samsung, Vodafone, and Microsoft. The group has also been suspected to be behind last year’s attack on EA Games.
Police claimed that a few members of the Lapsus$ were arrested and two teenagers were charged with multiple cyber security defaults and no one knows what happened to them. But the gang didn’t stop their actions and they started hacking the tech-giants with even more velocity as if the arrests have woken the beast up.
Along with the information on Lapsus$, Uber also updated a post on its website about the hack with additional details it had uncovered in its investigation. According to the given information, a contractor’s account was compromised, setting off the series of events that saw hackers access Uber’s internal systems. Uber says it believes the contractor’s Uber password was accessed via malware installed on the user’s device and that these credentials were possibly sold on the dark web. The company claims that they are now back to normal and no major side-effects of the hack were visible in the working of the app or the service. The security update posted by Uber said;
“The attacker posted a message to a company-wide Slack channel, which many of you saw, and reconfigured Uber’s OpenDNS to display a graphic image to employees on some internal sites. The attacker was able to access our dashboard at HackerOne, where security researchers report bugs and vulnerabilities. However, any bug reports the attacker was able to access have been remediated. Throughout, we were able to keep all of our public-facing Uber, Uber Eats, and Uber Freight services operational and running smoothly. Because we took down some internal tools, customer support operations were minimally impacted and are now back to normal.”
Soon after the attack, Uber started looking for cyber security experts for thier company for all the branches and offices as if there were no security experts in the company before the hack.
Nevertheless, Uber was quick to reach out to the FBI and get them involved in the situation so that the defaulters of the breach could get caught so that there are no future problems.
“We believe that this attacker (or attackers) are affiliated with a hacking group called Lapsus$, which has been increasingly active over the last year or so. We are in close coordination with the FBI and US Department of Justice on this matter and will continue to support their efforts.”
On the other hand, Rockstar Games have been oddly quiet after the leak as they have suffered a lot more than Uber but there are reports of action being taken against the hackers or the steps to avoid any other precautions. They do post an official statement admitting that the leaks have been true and they are very dishearted. They tweeted on 19 September( Yesterday) that;
“We recently suffered a network intrusion in which unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto. We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way. Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned and we remain as committed as ever to delivering an experience to you, our players, that truly exceeds your expectations ”
With this statement, it looks as if the company has accepted its loss and has moved on, though hurt, they don’t want to rub on their wounds.
