Govt to establish science & technology institutes across Pakistan

The government is planning to establish science and technology institutes in different disciplines for rapid socio-economic development of the country.

For this purpose, Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) has devised a “National Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy (STI)” which is pending for approval by the Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.

After approval of the strategy document, different Science and Technology (S&T) Institutes would be established across the country including backward areas within ten years.

In 2016, Pakistan Council for Science and Technology (PCST) under the direction of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), prepared “Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy 2014-18″. The main features of the revised STI Strategy and Action Plan include clearly defined timelines, estimation of costs, identification of implementing agencies, milestones, deliverables and key outcomes of the proposed actions.

MoST is also considering to establish Precision Systems Training Center (PSTC) at Gwadar at a cost of over 777 million rupees. PSTC imparts quality technical education and practical training for the development of an effective and adequate national human capital capable of meeting national and international challenges.

In addition to the establishment of S&T institutes and PSTC, the Ministry is also considering the upgradation of fruit processing and analytical laboratories and establishment of gemstone cutting and polishing center at Skardu.

Established in 1972, MoST works to initiate and launch scientific and technological programs and projects as per national agenda. Its principal focus is on building Pakistan’s technological competence in the 21st century as we enter new markets and to strengthen the technological infrastructure.

PCST advises the government on various S&T policies and plans. It carries out the strategic planning of Research & Development (R&D) through expert think tanks.
