Government of Punjab Orders Transition to Electric Motorbikes

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the Punjab government to transition from petrol-powered bikes to eco-friendly electric ones, aiming to combat pollution and promote a cleaner environment in the province.

After a hearing on smog control measures, Justice Shahid Karim made it clear that Lahore needs a policy for its smaller and medium-sized public transit systems.

He emphasized that implementing the pollution policy could greatly enhance air quality and pushed for strict monitoring of motorbikes within the city. The case has been postponed until November 20th by the court.

Further information regarding the sources of air pollution was recently released by the Punjab Urban Unit in a report. According to the shocking results, 83.15% of the pollution in the province comes from cars that emit smoke.

The analysis highlights that, among all other sources of pollution, emissions from older or poorly maintained automobiles are the leading cause of air quality decline.
