Google to Introduce “Link to Text Fragment” Feature for PDF Reader in Chrome

Google is enhancing its Chrome PDF reader with the addition of the “Link to Text Fragment” feature, aiming to simplify sharing specific sections of lengthy documents.

The ‘Link to Text Fragment’ feature in Google Chrome lets you share a link to a specific part of a webpage. You select the text you want to highlight, and it creates a link. When someone clicks the link, it takes them to the exact text and highlights it.

This feature isn’t compatible with PDFs now, but Google is enhancing Chrome PDF reader by introducing the “Link to Text Fragment” feature, making it easier to share specific sections of lengthy documents.

An observer of Chromium code, Leo, revealed the feature and shared their discovery on X (formerly Twitter). A user on X shared that Google is set to introduce text selection in PDFs, along with a new feature for “Copy link to highlight” and the capability to share highlights with others.

This feature, once implemented, will simplify the way we share and access specific information in PDFs. While Google is currently experimenting with this feature, the timeline for its stable version release is not determined yet.

In addition to enhancing text fragment support in the PDF viewer, Google is making strides in improving tab grouping and utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) for scam detection.
