Google launches a new project to promote Pakistan’s cultural heritage

Google introduced today a remarkable project, called Wonders of Pakistan, to celebrate and promote Pakistan’s extraordinary cultural heritage. This archive dedicated to Pakistan’s historic landmarks includes some very striking images shot in a similar manner as Google Street View.

Pakistan’s rich cultural has also been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), with 6 sites listed as World Heritage Sites. 18 other sites are present on the tentative list. These include the Archaeological Ruins at Moenjodaro, Buddhist Ruins of Takht-i-Bahi, Shalimar Gardens and the Lahore Fort, Rohtas Fort, Makli Tombs and Taxila. All these sites and others have been listed by Google.

The collection includes photographs from The Citizens Archive of Pakistan, Lahore Museum, Walled City of Lahore to name a few. To make this project possible, Google officially partnered with some non-profit organizations striving to preserve Pakistan’s cultural legacy.

You can head over to the page dedicated to these locations and browse through them. You can see images from these sites, or browse through specific Pakistani items, or you can even search items made by specific artists. The site also provides Street Views of certain locations.

This isn’t the first time Google has tried to promote Pakistan’s historic sites. Back in 2012, they collaborated with the Punjab government for the culture heritage sites in Punjab. However, the new Wonders of Pakistan project is more inclusive.

Google, which is known for its acceptance of diverse cultures, not only promotes world heritage sites internationally but also incorporates diversity in their workplace culture.
