Google is finally bidding farewell to Google+

Google has announced via an official blog that it is letting go of Google Plus. Here’s what the post read:

“When we launched Google+, we set out to help people discover, share and connect across Google like they do in real life. While we got certain things right, we made a few choices that, in hindsight, we’ve needed to rethink. So over the next few months, we’re going to be making some important changes.”

Google Plus was launched in 2011 as a rival social media to Facebook. Now that Google Plus is gone, there is one thing that is very clear: no one can challenge the power of Facebook – not even a giant like Google. Google Plus was not attracting a lot of users. According to the results of a survey held in April this year, out of the 2.2 billion Google users only 111 million had active G+ profiles.

Google has spent the last few months chopping off features of G+ and incorporating them elsewhere. For instance, the Google+ Photos has been moved to the new Google Photos app. They are also introducing features like Google+ Collections where you can share and read posts organized according to your interests.

Google+ has also been disassociated from YouTube. Back in 2013, Google made it compulsory for users to have a G+ profile in order to make a YouTube Channel or even to leave a comment. This annoyed people a lot and from now onwards only a Google account will suffice.

Google says that the new changes will be rolled out in the coming few months.

Will you miss Google+ or are you relieved it’s finally gone? Let us know in the comments!
