Google Enhances Three-Button Navigation in Android 16 Update

Google is working on enhancing the three-button navigation system in its upcoming Android 16 update, set for release in Q2 2025. The new update will introduce a predictive back navigation feature, ensuring that users who prefer the three-button system have a comparable experience to those using the default gesture-based navigation.

This feature, which was initially released as an Android 13 developer sample, offers a glimpse of the screen that users are returning to when swiping. This feature was tested for almost two years before its release with Android 15, but the feature only worked with gesture navigation while leaving out the three-button navigation types.

To this end, Android 16 has been developed. Users of the application can now turn on the recommended back movement by pressing the back button for an extended period and view the respective display that they are about to leave. This will work in conjunction with all compatible applications, but it won’t work when swiping back to the home screen, indicating that the function is currently still under development by Google.

The update comes as part of Google’s ongoing efforts to ensure that three-button navigation, while largely phased out in favor of gestures, remains an accessible option for users who find it easier to use, especially for those with motor skill challenges or older users who prefer simplicity.

Android 16, which is expected to be at platform stability in Q1 2025, will probably be out for users to use in Q2 2025. However, many Android applications currently offer this feature, allowing users to experience smoother transitions once the update is fully rolled out.
