Google to buy HTC’s smartphone business

Tech company Google is reportedly in talks with HTC to acquire its smartphone division.

A report has been published by a Taiwanese media outlet which says that Google and HTC have been in talks for quite some time now the stage is set for Google to acquire HTC’s smartphone division. However, it has not been revealed to the public what the deal is worth in USD. The news was received with mix feelings in tech circles as Google’s previous experience of buying a mobile company was a bad dream for it. Google bought mobile phone making company Motorola back in 2012 for $12.5 billion and sold it for just $3 billion after two years in 2014. The deal cost Google a loss of billions of dollars.

HTC was once a flourishing smartphone company selling a great number of smartphones across the globe. However, in recent years it has failed to cater the needs of smartphone users. HTC recently released HTC 10 and U11 but failed to make an impact in the market. Moreover, it is reported that its revenues hit an all-time low in August. It is to be noted here that HTC was one of the leading smartphone makers in the United States, however, due to several unsuccessful smartphones launches its popularity in the region has declined drastically.

Furthermore, it is also reported that aside from HTC’ smartphone division, which Google would eventually buy, all other business sectors of HTC will function normally.

HTC makes Pixels smartphones for Google and by acquiring HTC’s smartphone division, the tech company might be planning to make more technologically advanced phones by itself to tackle or dethrone existing leading smartphone brands such as Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi etc.
