Global PC and Laptop Market Experiences a 15% Drop in 2022

Major laptop companies including Lenovo, HP, Dell, and Asus, all experienced a massive decline in growth

Ever since the COVID 19 pandemic in 2022, the world has been experiencing a massive technological shift. People now are more reliant on technology than they ever were. Companies who are shifting to a work from home structure are also super reliant on technological devices.

With so many positives, one could only expect for the PC and Laptop industry to grow massively. However, this is not the case and the global PC and Laptop industry has experienced a 15% drop in 2022. This is a comparison to the similar quarter of 2021.

Around 74.3 million shipments were made to consumers and distributors this quarter. This was an increase when compared to the last quarter but still a massive decline as compared to 2021 or even Q1 of 2022. Sales stood at 80.5 million in Q1 of 2022 and 71.3 million in Q2.

Calling these numbers a downfall for the industry would be an overstatement. This is because the sales in 2022, though lesser than 2021, are significantly higher than the pre-pandemic world. But what is it that caused a demand decrease after unmatched growth in 2021?

Well, experts have more than one reason for the sales decline in 2022. According to most industry experts, tech prices in 2022 were touching the sky because of a chip shortage. With high prices, it was becoming difficult for consumers to spend big money on PC’s and laptops.

Another reason behind the sales decline could be the pandemic effect. What this means is that in 2021, major industries shifted to a work from home criteria. This inturn increased demand for laptops and PC’s, thus resulting in huge sales for 2021. Now that a major part of that demand is met, it could be years until we see a financial year as profitable as 2021.

While all laptop and PC companies experienced a massive decline in sales, Apple stood tough. The tech giant in the third quarter of 2022 made over 10,060 shipments, which is a 40% increase when compared to Q3 of 2021. What do you think is Apple’s secret for growing even in the most difficult times? Drop your thoughts in the comments below.
