Galaxy S10 to feature a Face ID and in-display fingerprint scanner

Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are one of the best flagships launched until now, due to a bundle of features they pack along. However, there is at least one factor in which Samsung is way behind Apple i.e. the unavailability of a 3D front-facing camera like what we have seen in iPhone X, which emits 30,000 points of infrared light around your face to capture a 3D image to unlock the phone. The same tech also empowers iPhone X’s Animoji features. Samsung has also introduced intelligent scan and AR Emoji in S9 variants, but these features need to be more refined.

As of now, a new report from a South Korean news outlet, The Investor hints that Samsung might be looking to introduce a 3D sensing camera technology for the next Galaxy S phone, by partnering with a 3D camera startup Mantis Vision. Samsung is all in on its 10th-anniversary smartphone likely to be called Galaxy S10. Mantis Vision will also be teaming up with camera module maker Namuga which currently supplies Samsung with camera modules for its low-end and mid-range smartphones, such as the Galaxy A-series and Galaxy J-series.

Mantis Vision is currently working on various 3D camera tech projects that can match features with the iPhone X’s TrueDepth camera. The company is developing a structured light transmitter and receiver, a front-facing camera, and a time of flight/proximity sensor. These are the components required to make a TrueDepth camera set like what we have seen in the iPhone X’s “notch” at the top.

In addition, the report also indicates that the next-generation Galaxy S-series smartphone will also have an in-display fingerprint sensor similar to the one we saw in Vivo X20 Plus UD and Vivo Apex. Samsung was expected to use the under display fingerprint sensor for the upcoming Galaxy Note 9 smartphone but the company has dropped the idea as the technology does not meet the company’s standard.

The below video shows that the work is underway at Mantis Vision’s lab.
