Islamabad: The Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE), in collaboration with the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and the Islamic World Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), has inaugurated the Pakistan Mathematics Olympiad (PMO).
This landmark initiative seeks to empower students, both domestically in Pakistan and internationally, by providing them with a platform to demonstrate their mathematical competencies while simultaneously fostering their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
The PMO is a prestigious competition specifically tailored for students at the secondary and higher secondary educational levels or their equivalent. Acknowledging the fundamental significance of mathematics across diverse disciplines, this initiative aims to enhance students’ comprehension of the subject while simultaneously motivating them to consider careers in areas that require analytical and logical reasoning.
The PMO is scheduled to convene on December 8th, 2024, at a total of 69 examination centers throughout Pakistan, including three centers situated abroad. Over 7,500 students from various regions have already registered, signifying a remarkable degree of interest in the competition.
The Mathematics Department at LUMS has been instrumental in molding the competition by formulating a tailored syllabus that adheres to international standards. This syllabus guarantees that participants acquire a robust foundation in mathematics, and a model question paper has been provided to facilitate effective preparation for students.
The academic rigor of the competition is enhanced by appealing rewards, which encompass monetary incentives, medals, laptops, and opportunities for admittance to some of the premier educational institutions in Pakistan. These awards are designed to inspire students to extend their capabilities and achieve excellence in the discipline of mathematics.
This initiative represents a substantial advancement in the educational framework of Pakistan, affording students the opportunity to achieve academic excellence and make meaningful contributions to the global mathematical community. The Pakistan Mathematics Olympiad is poised to assume a pivotal position in the evolution of mathematics education and in motivating the forthcoming generation of mathematicians.
