Faulty end-to-end encryption lets deleted WhatsApp conversations to be retraced

WhatsApp messages on iOS can be backtracked and reconstructed, even if deleted, due to an alleged loophole in the WhatsApp’s famous end-to-end encryption, a Security Researcher revealed on Friday.

Jonathan Zdziarski, a famous iOS security researcher, called the vulnerability as “WhatsApp Forensic Artifacts”. He claimed that he has found traces of deleted and archived chats which can potentially be retracted to the original chat. Even “Clear all Chats” does not work. The loophole seemed to be existent on the latest version of WhatsApp for iOS.

The Researcher further indicated that the only way to wipe-out the thread in entirety is to delete the WhatsApp application. He also mentioned how WhatsApp could fix the issue.

WhatsApp had revealed earlier this year that it would be encrypting all the chats from one end to the other which meant that only the sender and the receiver would be able to see the sent message. But it seems that the encryption is not anywhere near to perfection as the traces of messages that too after deletion could be found resident and may even idle for months.
