Facebook Stories just added funky new AR features

Facebook just added some additional creative tools to the Facebook Camera, that you can share in your Facebook Stories. The camera lets you draw on the world around you due to funky Augmented Reality (AR) features. The company plans to make this feature quite popular since their biggest competitor is Snapchat.

Regarding the Facebook Camera, John Barnet, the Team Lead of this feature added,
“We wanted to give people an easy way to create with augmented reality and draw in the world around them by 3D drawing.”

Facebook plans to attract more users with AR drawing. The feature lets you scribble on the world around you, then move your camera and see the markings stay in place. This is quite a fun way to add graffiti that only exists on your screen and only you can see it.

The feature lets you add the drawings before or while you’re recording a video, it allows you to draw on something out of frame, then it comes into real life. Facebook will eventually add more brushes beyond the pastel gradient colors seen in the video below.

The company promises that the technology understands the objects and corners present in the environment and then creates a 3D image. With this feature, Facebook could detect surfaces as well, including walls and tables to wrap the drawings onto them. For now, it only does that in optimal light conditions, when it’s confident about the object recognition. Facebook says that the update is rolling out to users over the coming weeks.
