Facebook has announced a new version for its Android app which consumes less data and even work on slow internet connection. The app called Facebook Lite is specifically developed for regions where more than one billion users access Facebook with varying network conditions.According to the Facebook blog, the app size is only 1 MB which makes it quicker for download, install and experience the main features such as News Feed, status updates, photos, notifications etc without any hindrance.
Facebook did release an even smaller size app, about 252k in size earlier this year for areas where bandwidth conservation was important especially on slow 2G networks. At the time, the app was made available in only eight countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.
The Facebook Lite will start rolling out from today in countries across Asia and later, in other parts of the world such as Latin America, Africa and Europe.
