Facebook is no longer the most popular social network among teenagers

It’s official. Facebook has been dethroned as the most popular social media platform among teens. That place has been taken by Snapchat.

In a recent survey by Piper Jaffray called “Taking Stock with Teens”, Snapchat came out on top with 28% of the votes. Released in 2011, Snapchat is essentially a photo-messaging app. It wasn’t until 2014 that Snapchat took some stride with the users. It is now so popular that even celebrities reach out to their fans via Snapchat.

A close second to Snapchat was Instagram at 27% votes. Instagram has seen quite a loss in these numbers as last year, in a very similar survey, Instagram had 33% votes whereas Snapchat was at 19%.

Facebook has taken quite a fall, landing at 4th place (17% votes) behind Twitter which had 18%. The bottom of the list was Google+ with only 1% votes, falling behind Tumblr and Pinterest who got only 2% votes each.

The possible reason why teens love Snapchat the most is that it is photo-based and not heavily text reliant like Facebook and Twitter. Furthermore, Snapchat recently launched their animated filters which have become extremely popular among people. Plus, it is not just about the pictures. You can get news snippets too. Snapchat Discover is an in-built feature that brings you news clips from networks like Buzzfeed, Mashable, Tastemade etc. They also cover events like the Oscars, MTV Awards, Wimbledon etc on Snapchat Live.

Haters may hate, but Snapchat is proving that it has the potential to rival social media giant Facebook.
