Facebook is evaluating its policy against Deepfake videos, Founder

Facebook CEO and Founder, Mark Zuckerberg, has mentioned that its company is evaluating its policy against Deepfake videos and, in future, these might be treated differently than the fake news.

While giving an interview this Wednesday, the Facebook chief mentioned that in, future, deepfake videos might get a different treatment than the fake news. “We’re going through the policy process of thinking through what the deepfake policy should be,” told (https://www.aspenideas.org/sessions/mark-zuckerberg-at-aspen-ideas-festival-2019)a Harvard Professor during the interview. Deepfake videos are fake videos created to seem realistic using artificial intelligence and different audio/video manipulation techniques.

Mark Zuckerberg mentioned that as Artificial Intelligence technology becomes more sophisticated, Facebook would draft a different policy for this type of content which will let the tech giant handle these differently than how it handles the normal false information. Currently, deepfakes videos are not very common, but as technology improves such videos could be created for every other user. Facebook seemingly wants to prepare for that moment.

The issue was first raised when, earlier, a fake video of US Speaker of House went viral on the platform. At that time, Facebook had refused to turn down the video mentioning that the video didn’t go against any of the policies of the company. Rather the company was considering deepfake videos as any other fake news or misinformation on the platform.

The company mentioned that even if such a video of Mark Zuckerberg had gone viral, that wouldn’t have been removed. “If third-party fact-checkers mark it as false, we will filter it from Instagram’s recommendation surfaces like Explore and hashtag pages,” the company spokesperson had mentioned. Later, a deepfake video of Mark Zuckerberg also went viral on the platform.
