In the worldwide fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook has announced that Apple is manufacturing and supplying face shields for health workers around the world. In a video posted on Twitter, he mentioned that more than 20 million face shields were donated until now Apple.
Apple has launched a “company-wide effort”, in which employees in different parts of the world have put int heir efforts to design, manufacture, mass produce, and supply these shields. This effort has required the efforts of the company’s product designers, engineers, operating and packaging teams, and the suppliers.
Tim Cook also informed his followers on Twitter that their first shipment went out to Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara Valley and that the, “feedback from doctors was very positive.”
These face shields are shipped out as flat, plastic sheets with a silicone strap and a forehead band. They can be assembled in less than two minutes by almost anyone. The flat shipping of the masks cuts down on packaging and shipping costs and the short assembly time cuts down on any time being wasted on putting them together.
The Coronavirus, being essentially a respiratory disease, infiltrates the body mainly through the nose and the mouth. Health workers all around the world have been and are being exposed to the disease every single day and there is a global shortage of protective gear such as face masks and gloves. A face shield blocks your face from the immediate exposure of the virus and having this on could potentially save countless lives.
