Everything we know so far about Samsung’s Galaxy Fold

Samsung is expected to launch its highly awaited foldable phone alongside its flagship Galaxy S10 lineup on Wednesday (tomorrow) in San Francisco.

While many were waiting to see the new Galaxy S10 line-up with punch-hole displays, it seems Samsung’s foldable device might steal the spotlight from Samsung’s flagship line-up. According to Samsung’s most reputable leaker, Evan Blass the new foldable device is set to be named as “Galaxy Fold”.

The South Korean giant teased the engineering marvel during Samsung’s developer’s conference last year. The phone was only slightly displayed to showcase the bendable OLED panel based on some kind of segmented design which enabled the phone to switch between tablet and smartphone mode.

During Samsung’s Developer conference, it was also revealed that Google was working on a special operating system tailor-made for the foldable device since the phone will have a special orientation mode owing to its unique design.

Samsung and Google have been working on developing a special version of the Android operating software for the phone, whose final user interface will depend largely on which of the two designs is chosen.

Specs and Price

Ever since its teaser back in November 20118, not much was revealed about the phone, however, some display specifications have been revealed for the public:

  • It has a Pixel density of 420 ppi
  • The resolution, when folded, is 840 x 1960, but 1536 x 2152 when unfolded.
  • The folded, phone version of the Infinity Flex has a 4.58-inch display with an aspect ratio of 21:9
  • The unfolded, tablet version has a more standard 4.2:3 aspect ratio and a screen size of 7.3 inches.

While several leaks and rumors suggest the following specs:

  • Qualcomm’s 7nm Snapdragon 855 chipset
  • QHD OLED display
  • 5000-6000mah battery

While the phone will prove to be the first of its kind, it is expected to carry an enormous price tag which will be somewhere between $1500-2000. Recently we saw various implementations of a foldable phone from Royole and Xiaomi about what a foldable phone can look like. With competitors such as Huawei and Motorola also joining the race, 2019 has a lot in store for tech-enthusiasts.
