ECP to hold talks with political parties to address rigging concerns regarding Electronic Voting

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has said that it would soon call a meeting of the political parties to discuss and take them into confidence regarding tech deployment for Elections. The Election commission has informed the Science and Technology ministry that it would have to take the relevant stakeholders on board before transitioning to electronic voting.

In a separate meeting, the science ministry secretary and officials from a Spanish consultancy firm gave a briefing to the ECP officials on NADRA’s internet voting system.

Earlier, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), which comprises the main opposition parties, had rejected the government’s “one-sided” electoral reforms, which comprise the electronic voting machines (EVMs).

In response to the opposition’s concerns, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry said that the government had repeatedly invited the Opposition for discussions regarding the electoral reforms, but to no avail. He had also alleged that those who are against electronic voting want to see a rigging-riddled election system in place.

The President, PM Khan, and other ministers have remained determined to introduce I-voting & EVMs despite the opposition’s concerns and pushed for swift implementation of high-tech electronic voting machines.
