Parallax effect is nothing new in the world of graphics and devices. Our dear friends who live and breathe Apple like to call the iOS 7-touting iPhones the first devices ever to feature the cool-looking layered background feature but the reality is that it has been around for quite some time. Microsoft’s not-so-successful ZuneHD had the very same effect (called the “Tilt effect” on the device) back in 2009. However, we’re not here to bash Apple or the Apple fans. It’s true that iPhone made the Parallax effect come back to limelight and now you can get the same thing on your Android device as well.
Some of the apps that achieve the Parallax effect for the wallpaper are paid, others are free. We’ll list some of the most famous and usability-wise functional iPhone-like Parallax Wallpapers here to give you an idea of what it is and how it works, you may go ahead and try others too if you like the feature.
This is a free parallax wallpaper whose functionalities can be extended with an in-app purchase. It gives the effect of a cracked screen underneath which the board internals are visible. It works just fine but on some screens, the text might become unreadable because of the texture of the underlying wallpaper.

This wallpaper includes 6 of the Nexus series backgrounds by default and there is an option to set custom background as well, a feature that is mostly not available in other free apps. The parallax effect is not perfect and there’s a slight delay in the phone movement and its perceived on-screen effect, the app’s settings pane is also bloated by ads but this is the closest you can get to the Parallax effect on Android devices for free with custom background.

Mountains Now is a beautiful, live wallpaper, and one of the personal favorites of mine. It is free for casual use but a full version can be purchased which changes the visuals of wallpaper according to local time (like moon and stars in night-time and sun in day-time).

Galaxy Parallax is a beautiful parallax-supported wallpaper with layers of stars one over the other that respond to motion of the phone when held I hand. Only down-side of this wallpaper (and others from the same developer) is the abundance of intrusive ads but thankfully they are only present in the settings pane.

This live wallpaper comes from Samsung and it is not Parallax in a sense of gyro-based motion but is based on scrolling the screen. When different home-screens are scrolled, the visual changes in the background are Parallax-based. All versions of this wallpaper (Fall, Spring, Winter and Twilight) are mesmerizing and showcase some beautiful visuals and textures.

If there’s one Parallax wallpaper you ought to try on your Android device, it’s this one. Best viewed on tablets, this live wallpaper presents very high-quality renders of Earth, the Moon revolving around it, and the distant galaxies in the backdrop. You can interact with the heavenly bodies by swiping your finger against the screen, and they rotate by themselves as well. You’ll have to unlock extra features like distance between Earth and Moon, rotation speed etc. but what the free version presents is beautiful in its own right.

This is a beautiful live wallpaper for all those who want to enjoy the Xperia goodness on their display screens. It is not Parallax, but incorporates several interactive features and the most beautiful of them is water ripples’ effect which is triggered by touching the screen or dragging the finger on it. Colour themes can also be changes from in-app settings.
