A full-day web programming workshop for women known as Django Girls is being organized in Lahore. The workshop will happen on 28th May at the Information Technology University.
Django Girls Lahore is a part of the wider Django Girls initiative. It is the first time this initiative is being taken in Pakistan. It is being spearheaded by QC Technologies’ Ammara Laeeq, Zahid Irfan and Waqas Younas. They realized what a terrific opportunity it would be for beginners to learn the basics of web development using Python, CSS, Django and HTML.
The applicants need not know anything about programming. In fact, even for total beginners, the workshop is a good place to start learning how to build a website. Multiple coaches are available to guide first-timers. The attendees also get to meet inspirational people from the industry.
Applicants are required to bring their own laptops, since taking home the work they accomplish and continuing to work on it is imperative to the Django Girls movement. On the software side, it would help to have Django installed beforehand but it does not matter since the coaches will be there to install it on-the-spot as well.
Applicants need not be from Lahore as financial aid for traveling and other expenses can be offered to women who are passionate about learning. The organizers are also willing to provide assistance with booking flights or hotels in Lahore.
The highlights of the event include:
Django Girls is a non-profit organization that was started by two Polish girls Ola Starski and Ola Sendecka. It was born in July 2014 with the aim of empowering women and creating a community that assists women in organizing and participating in free, one-day programming workshops by providing tools, resources and support. The initiative primarily aims to improve gender disparity in the field of programming. The volunteer-run organization has over 300 volunteers who have helped to organize hundreds of events in over 60 countries.
Since Lahore is one of the country’s major IT hubs with an ever-increasing level of gender-diversity in workplaces, Django Girls will surely be a success. Around 30-40 women are expected to show up to the event and this is a great opportunity for bringing more amazing women into the world of technology. Larger software houses should also follow suit and take interest in organizing events like these.
