In a surprising twist for Xbox fans, Kojima Productions has released Death Stranding: Director’s Cut for Xbox Series X, marking the game’s arrival five years after its debut as a PlayStation 4 exclusive. The game, which was developed by the esteemed Hideo Kojima, was shadow-dropped, in addition to a new cloud-streaming version for Amazon’s Luna platform.
For the next 15 days, Xbox players can purchase Death Stranding: Director’s Cut at a launch discount price of $19.99.
Death Stranding follows Sam Bridges, portrayed by Norman Reedus, as he traverses a post-apocalyptic America ravaged by mysterious events. His mission is to deliver vital supplies and reconnect isolated cities through a sprawling data network, all under the guidance of the President of the United Cities of America, who is also revealed to be Sam’s mother.
The original game was celebrated for its groundbreaking and cooperative gameplay mechanics but was also criticized for being overly reliant on repetitive fetch quests. The 2021 Director’s Cut for PlayStation 5 improved on the original, delivering an enriched and more engaging experience.
Initially published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Death Stranding belongs to Kojima Productions today per a report in the Japanese Automaton. The franchise is set to continue with Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, due to arrive in 2025. Additionally, Kojima Productions has partnered with film studio A24 to produce a movie adaptation of the game.
Beyond Death Stranding, Kojima Productions is expanding its horizons, developing the horror game OD in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios, and working on Physint, an action-espionage title with Sony.
