Corning Gorilla Glass 4 is Here to Make Shattered Displays History

Corning Gorilla Glass is the inconspicuous face of all prominent smartphones and tablets. It has been there since the day you unboxed your brand-new device, and has been protecting it from scratches and cracks without you even noticing or being grateful for it. But it’s not perfect. The currently-available third iteration of CGG is, therefore, about to become obsolete as there is stronger, sturdier Corning Gorilla Glass 4 just around the corner to replace it.

Engineers at Corning are focusing their efforts towards something all gadget-owners dread: accidental drops. With Gorilla Glass 4 which was announced today, Corning aims to make shattered displays a thing of the past with extensive research and testing procedures. Corning says it has achieved ‘dramatically improved performance’ of its glass in the drop tests. Gorilla Glass, according to the lab test results, showed 2 times better results compared to competitive Aluminosilicate glass designs.

Corning prides itself on having the most rugged and advanced testing procedures to best approximate real-life scenarios. On this note, Corning has said that it has been testing Gorilla Glass 4 against scenarios like rough surfaces, streets, sidewalks, and parking lots, where it performed up to the mark. According to Corning, while regular soda lime glass shatters from a height of 1 meter, Corning Gorilla Glass 4 managed to survive 80 percent of the time.

According to Corning, it has already entered the shipment phase of its new product. Therefore there’s a high probability that you’ll find Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on products from popular brands you buy from the first quarter of 2015 and onwards. While it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re free to go dropping your smartphones from 2015, Corning Gorilla Glass 4 just might be able to save that repair money so that you can later spend it giving ‘mobile survival’ treat to your friends.
