Careem services to be suspended till 10th Muharram in Pakistan

The cab service Careem will have its services suspended during the cellular signal blockage on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. The facility to schedule a ride is unavailable since 6AM on Monday 10th October and will be so until 11.59 PM on Wednesday 12 October.

Due to security reasons, mobile phone services will be made unavailable in major cities on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, especially in places near procession routes. Since Careem’s services are based on smartphone applications and mobile internet, the suspension will create issues in their operations.

This would be a great inconvenience to people for whom Careem provides a comfortable mode of conveyance, which would have been especially importance for people to move around on a religious holiday. The closure of cellular services on sensitive occasions such as national and religious holidays has become a norm due to the ongoing security situation in the country.

Though a need to ensure security, it causes a lot of inconvenience and trouble to people, in addition to causing losses in millions for telecommunication companies, the government and all businesses depending on telecommunication services. According to a Bytes for All report, the Eid holidays in 2012 alone caused a loss of Rs 507 million due to blockage of mobile phone services.
