Careem Captain killed in Rawalpindi

While commuting, a Careem captain Muhammad Waqas, was killed yesterday.

Early morning yesterday, as much as four unidentified individuals on two bikes intercepted Muhammad Waqas near Holy Family Hospital in Rawalpindi. The eyewitness put that after intercepting, the interceptors tried to drag driver out of the car as part of a robbery. Upon resistance, the bikers killed the driver and sped away.

Dawn reported that Waqas was driving to Block E in Satellite Town to pick up a passenger, after receiving a call earlier. Although it is still unclear, if the driver was doing the service on his own behalf or if he was serving any particular company, Careem has confirmed that the driver was off-duty from them – as reported by ProPakistani.

In a statement, the company said “May Allah rest the departed soul and grant strength to his family to bear this irreparable loss. Ameen. We request you all to remember Mr. Waqas and his family in your prayers.”, ProPakistani has quoted.

Careem, the e-cab booking and hiring service based out of the Middle Eastern and Northern Africa region, introduced its service in Pakistan a couple of years back. The company managed to get considerable encouragement from Pakistani masses and was soon able to scale its operations to as much as six Pakistani cities. It even took part in Pakistani entrepreneurial landscape through a project named ERUPT along with several other partnerships.

Although some issues surfaced due to the usage of private vehicles as commercial taxis, Careem Network was, however, able to resume its services the required adjustments had been made. Recently, Pakistani Rickshaw drivers from the city of Lahore came out on streets protesting against the e-cab hailing services for not attending to the commercial tax laws.
