Numerous fire-catching incidents have forced BMW to recall over a million cars, asking drivers to park vehicles in the open till the faulty parts are replaced.
The famous luxury sedan manufacturer company was forced to recall over a million cars and SUVs under two different recalls, with about 7 lac recall letters sent in each. These make for a total of 1.4 million recalls but since some of these recalls have been sent to same vehicles, there would be a total of a little over a million cars that would be recalled.
It isn’t sure if these recalls would be extended to the rest of the world but, right now, the recalls have been filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in US. Both of the recalls are related to fire catching issues. One of the recall has been made due to faulty heating/air-conditioning wiring, while the second issue relates to the wiring in main engine of the sedans.
The models that are affected by these recalls include the BMW 3-series, 5-series, X5, X3 and Z3. About 740,000 cars from 2007-20011 models of 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 525i, 525xi, 528i, 528xi, 530i, 530xi, X3 3.0si, X3 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive30i, Z4 3.0i, Z4 3.0si and Z4 sDrive30i have been recalled, while 673,000 cars from the 2007-2011 models of 323i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328i xDrive, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335i xDrive, 335xi, 335d, 335is and M3 have been recalled.
As the car models affected by the recalls aren’t much recent, the problem seems to be existent for quite a few time now. However, the occurrences of cars catching fires from these issues were very rare until now when BMW has finally decided to call these cars back. A recent report from ABC News also had put that as much as 40 BMW cars had caught fire, while just being parked, over the past 5 years. BMW says that the repairs for these cars will start this month.
