ASUS reveals the ‘world’s thinnest bezels’ in the Zenbook S13

ASUS has broken new ground in CES ’19 by announcing the Zenbook S13, which comes equipped with the world’s thinnest display bezels. With a jaw-dropping screen-to-body ratio of 97%, this is about as close as one can get to a borderless display.

The 13.9-inch 1080p display consists of bezels measuring at a meager 2.5 mm thick. With the lightweight 2.4-pound laptop measuring at 13 inches long and 12.9 mm thick, all while incorporating the NVIDIA GeForce MX150 chip, ASUS can proudly declare that the S13 is the thinnest machine in the world with discrete graphics.

Coming over to the less highlight-inducing features, the Zenbook S13 consists of solid processing capability with Intel’s 8th Gen core i5 and i7. Moreover, it supports a fairly decent 16 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB worth of SSD storage drives.

The sleek machine packs two USB 3.1 Type-C ports, a full-size USB 3.1 port and a MicroSD card slot. ASUS also claims that the S13’s 50Wh battery will have a life of 15 hours, which is good enough for a laptop of its stature. Yet another welcome feature is the integrated fingerprint-sensor for Windows Hello authentication.

Of course, it’s natural to wonder about the major compromises that ASUS had to make to achieve these ultra-slim bezels, and surprisingly enough, there were only a couple of them. For one, the 4K display had to be sacrificed, while the webcam had to be packaged in a notch at the top of the screen. The latter actually makes it easier to pull open the laptop lid though, so it’s a win-win scenario.

The Zenbook S13 (UX392) is set to be released in the first quarter of 2019, and while pricing hasn’t been revealed yet, Engadget expects it to be somewhere around $15,000.
