Astrohaus has carved out a unique niche in the market. Based in Michigan, the company creates devices specifically designed to help writers stay focused and eliminate distractions. In today’s world, where platforms like Instagram can easily divert attention, completing that novel has never been more challenging.
The business has built its reputation by being the first to market with innovative products, but its most recent offering has joined a trend. Wordrunner, which will be unveiled at CES 2025, continues Astrohaus’ commitment to distraction-free writing while embracing the mechanical keyboard boom.
The Freewrite Wordrunner is really just a regular mechanical keyboard with some extra features designed to help writers. Additionally, the peripheral features a Wordometer, which counts words, and a “sprint timer” that allows users to write quickly.
The concept is to incorporate productivity tools into the product without any external components. To put it simply, Astrohaus is providing a means to forego writing programs and concentrate on the act of writing.
“Writers use keyboards more than almost anyone else, yet they’ve never had professional-grade tools built specifically for them,” founder and CEO Adam Leeb says. “While gamers have an entire industry creating specialized features for them, writers have been forced to rely on general-purpose keyboards and add-on software to track their work. Wordrunner transforms this relationship by making the keyboard itself an active participant in the writing process — not just a passive input device, but a true writing companion.”
It has floating keys made of aluminum and a red control knob. The system is set to be released in late 2025 after a successful Kickstarter campaign that begins in February.
