Deep Fusion is a piece of image processing software that Apple has developed for the brand-new iPhone 11 and 11 Pro. It wasn’t ready to be released when the new iPhone models were unveiled two weeks ago, but now it will be released to developers worldwide through Apple’s upcoming iOS 13.2 developer beta. This means it will soon be available on the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro for the general public.
Deep Fusion is a very complicated piece of software, as you would expect with both camera hardware and software becoming increasingly more complicated. It works by constantly taking photos even when you haven’t pressed the shutter button, to always have 4 recent frames at super-fast shutter speeds. When you press the shutter button, it takes one more long exposure shot. Then, it takes 3 fast shots and long exposure shot and compiles them into what Apple calls a “synthetic long”. After that, Deep Fusion picks out details from al these shots and runs every single pixel through four detail processing steps to finally arrive at a super crisp and realistic image.
Deep Fusion’s primary function is to enhance photos taken in indoor or medium-light settings and will help to unlock the true potential of the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro cameras. The software will automatically come into operation based on the level of light in the shot and the lens you are using. In standard mode, the wide-angle lens will use Deep Fusion to enhance medium to low light images. The telephoto mode will make extensive use of Deep Fusion unless there is a very bright or very dim scene. And the ultrawide mode will not support Deep Fusion.
