Apple sold over 8 million watches in last quarter of 2017

Apple has proved its supremacy in the tech realm once again. Coming on top of constant criticism, Apple has managed to sell over 8 million units of its Apple Watch series in the last quarter of 2017. These numbers have been revealed by Canalys, a Singapore based analyst firm.

The 8 million figure is by far the largest amount of smartwatches sold by one firm within one quarter, which makes it an official record. The previous claimant of the record was Fitbit, who had sold over 6 million units in the last quarter of 2015.

It has been revealed that the Apple Watch Series 3, which is the latest model of Apple’s lineup was the main driving force behind this figure, contributing roughly 9 million in sales to date (i.e. since its initial release). The main selling point of the Series 3 is said to be its cellular version which enables users to make phone calls using the watch. This is one of the main reasons behind major carriers of USA, Australia, and Japan keeping large stocks of the Watch before the holiday season began.

If a broader perspective is considered, it can be said that Apple has genuinely taken the market by storm. Overall sales in 2017 exceeded 18 million units, which is 54% more than the amount sold in 2016. Crossing the 8 million mark is a huge achievement considering the fact that Apple’s sole target is the segment of people using Apple’s smartphones, i.e. the iPhone.

In terms of market share, Apple currently holds 23% while the Chinese wonder-brand Xiaomi and Fitbit lag behind with 21% and 20% of the total share respectively.

It would be safe to say that Apple’s investors and top management would be delighted with these numbers, which can be seen by the fact that the CEO, Tim Cook recently underwent a phone call with the investors to inform them about the new figures along with news of the sales revenue doubling within a quarter.
