Apple sells 3.5 million smartwatches in the Q2 of 2018

Apple has shipped 3.5 million Apple Watches globally in the latest quarter (Q2 2018) which is a 30% increase over the same period last year.

Although Apple does not mention exact sales figures, the latest data from leading analyst company, Canalys, gives impressive sales figures. And the Apple wearables market as a whole is growing fast, too. The cellular Apple Watch Series 3 hit the maximum number of smartwatches shipped to Asia in the second quarter of 2018.

Overall, global smart watch shipment reached 10 million thanks to remarkably strong performances from Garmin and Fitbit among others. As a result, Apple’s share of the wearables market decreased as compared to the previous quarter this year.

Research Analyst Vincent Thielke said, “Apple faces a growing threat from competitors, which have started to pass the million quarterly shipments mark.” He added Vendors are trying to differentiate their products with advanced heart-rate metrics, smart coaching, and mapping, and consumers now have a much wider range of smartwatches to choose from than they did a year ago.

Senior Analyst Jason Low said, since the launch of the Apple Watch Series 3, the tech company has formed partnerships with telecom operators in Australia, Japan, and Singapore, with Thailand, India and South Korea added in the last quarter. He added, “Operators in these markets are willing to resell connected devices other than smartphones that can help them generate extra revenue from data services.”

Now there are reports that Samsung and Google are also launching Galaxy and Pixel watches respectively. When there are other competitors around, Apple needs to figure out the advancements it can bring to its Watches to maximise the sales.
